Workers from the Pennsylvania Conservation Corps are making major improvements to a dry part of the historic Lehigh Canal in Jim Thorpe, clearing shrubbery, removing debris and installing stone bales.
This is among the first major work occurring along the canal in the borough. Until now, most improvements along the canal in Carbon County have been made in the 6-mile area serviced by the Lehigh Canal Recreation Commission.
Reuben Hill, secretary of the commission, said the work in Jim Thorpe is being done with matching grant funds. The commission is matching the government grant in anticipation of Jim Thorpe joining the commission.
Presently, the commission is comprised of representatives of Franklin, East Penn and Mahoning townships, and Lehighton, Parryville and Weissport boroughs.
