Driver swerves to avoid deer, crashes

A Lehighton woman was taken to a hospital as a precaution after a one-vehicle crash in Rush Township, state police at the Frackville barracks said.

Patience M. Kresge, 20, was transported by personnel from the Tamaqua Community Ambulance Association to the St. Luke’s Miners Campus, Coaldale, after the crash, police said.

The crash occurred at 5:01 p.m. on July 5 on Route 54 (Hauto Highway).

Police said she reported no injuries but elected to be transported to the hospital for a medical evaluation.

They said she was driving a 2009 Hyundai Accent westbound when she swerved the car to avoid striking a deer that had entered its path. She lost control of the car, which hit a tree on the north side of the road before going down an embankment and coming to rest facing southwest.

Police said the car had damage to its front-end, hood and windshield, and was towed from the scene.
