The Tamaqua Historical Society is encouraging local churches, organizations and individuals to join in the nationwide “Bells Across America” celebration for the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence.

At 2 p.m. Saturday, the historical society is asking everyone to ring their bells in unison and commemoration of the signing of the Declaration of Independence 250 years ago by the 13 original colonies.

“It doesn’t matter whether you have a church bell, railroad bell, farm bell, school bell, hand bell, a cow bell or Christmas bells,” said society President Dale Freudenberger. “Bring them out in front of your home or organization and ring it at least 13 times at 2 p.m.”

The goal is to make a joyous celebratory sound throughout the Tamaqua area and beyond.

Freudenberger and the society encourage all to post pictures or videos the bell ringing on social media.
