A 55-year-old Philadelphia man was charged with driving under the influence after a car he was driving erratically crashed into a day care center in Port Carbon at 8:25 a.m. Monday.

State police at the Schuylkill Haven barracks said 22 children and four adult caretakers, who were inside the building, were uninjured in the crash.

Police said they were summoned to the Little Sunshines Day Care for a crash with entrapment and found the 2013 Nissan Pathfinder smashed into the side of the building.

They said their investigation determined the man, who they did not identify, was driving at unsafe speeds and forcing vehicles off the road prior to the crash.

Police said the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when it left the roadway at the intersection of Route 209 (Washington Street) and Wood Street and crashed onto a reinforced concrete bollard before going airborne and crashing through the kitchen area of the day care center.

Police said the crash caused severe structural damages to the building, and all of its occupants were immediately evacuated from the premises and taken to a staging area, where parents and guardians were advised of the incident.

Police said the man was transported to the Lehigh Valley Hospital-East, Pottsville, for medical treatment. He later consented to a chemical test of his blood, after which time he was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, causing a catastrophe, recklessly endangering another person and other charges related to the crash.
