JT falls to Williams Twp.

Sports are a form of competition, but they are also filled with learning experiences.

Following a Lehigh Valley Junior Connie Mack contest between Jim Thorpe and Williams Township on Tuesday, both coaches emphasized progression of growth and simply getting better every day.

The game ended up being a slugfest with teams trading offensive punches back and forth. WT provided the more damaging blows en route to a 14-9 victory.

Williams Township wasted no time getting on the board with three runs in the first, courtesy of two walks, four singles and a sacrifice fly. Thorpe, however, punched back immediately plating six in the bottom frame on five singles. Daniel Off and Ezra Krout each drove in one run on their hits, while Carter Reis knocked collected two RBIs with his hit.

The 6-3 lead for Jim Thorpe was short-lived, though, as Williams potted three runs again in the second on an RBI ground out, a triple and an RBI hit from Owen Wadas.

After Jim Thorpe retook the lead on an error in the bottom half, WT made ‘3’ its lucky number in the third with another three runs to take its second advantage at 9-7. Logan Rehl picked up an RBI with a sac fly in the inning, giving him three RBIs in three consecutive innings without a hit but instead with a productive out.

Both defenses began to settle in at this point. Off pitched two scoreless frames in relief for the Olympians, while Nick Vroman limited the damage through four and set the stage for Matthew Piparato to take over.

Thorpe took advantage of a couple defensive miscues by Williams Township to tie the score with one run in each of the fourth and fifth. However, they couldn’t survive one final punch from WT in the sixth.

For the fourth different inning, the visitors produced three runs to take a 12-9 lead. Rehl and Tyler Kovacs both drove in runs as part of a four-hit frame with Mason Hartrum and Vroman also contributing to the rally.

For the Olympians, the offense hit a brick wall, as the pitching change to Piparato became too much to overcome.

Two final runs from Williams cemented the contest in the seventh.

With a team as young as Jim Thorpe, head coach Vinnie Montefour is hopeful that games like this become vital to learning how to improve.

“We have a lot of young players; we’ve got one 14-year-old and 18 13-year-olds that have never played on this field before,” he said.

“There’s going to be growing pains. All I can say is there are going to be some good things happening in Jim Thorpe, and it’s going to be because of the struggles this season.”

The growth for Williams Township has been more noticeable over the course of the season to head coach Mike Piparato. His hope is that this type of progression carries his players well beyond the Connie Mack level.

“Our bats to start the season were not the way they are right now,” he said. “We’re hitting the ball pretty well right now, so I think the kids have a lot of confidence in their bats. Early in the season, we probably would’ve had a meltdown. I think the team has really gained confidence in themselves, and that’s what we’re looking for as we prepare for the next level.

“I think we have a few kids that might battle for varsity minutes next season on Wilson’s varsity team, and we’ve got a lot of guys that are going to be productive at the JV level.”

FINAL STATS ... Despite not having any hits, Rehl still led Williams Township with four RBIs. Hartrum was also very productive at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Four other batters produced RBIs for WT. The Olympians got two RBIs each from Off and Reis, while Zach Fougere went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run, and Jionni Puddu ended 2-for-3 with a run.
