Tigers fall to Holy Ghost Prep

BENSALEM — It’s a cliche in sports that sometimes you simply get beat by a better team.

That couldn’t have been more accurate for Northwestern on Monday.

In the Class 4A state baseball playoffs, the District 11 champion Tigers traveled down to the suburbs of Philadelphia to take on District 1 champion Holy Ghost Prep in a first round matchup.

It didn’t take long for Northwestern to find out just how truly overmatched they were, as the Firebirds got contributions from everyone at the plate and a stellar performance on the mound en route to a dominating 12-0 victory.

Division 1 commit Bam McNabb took the bump for Prep, and after opening the contest with a leadoff walk to NW’s Cannon Fitch, the right-hander retired the next 12 batters to toss four no-hit innings.

“It was a great game for us playing complementary baseball; threw the ball extremely well outside of that first walk,” Firebirds head coach Greg Olenski said. “Bam’s been lights out for us all year, so to see a great start out of him was awesome.

“When you play complementary baseball and you play for the name on front of the chest, it’s a beautiful thing.”

Prep struck early with two first-inning runs to kick start the offense, and then leadoff hitter Eddie Rosado ripped a three-run home run down the right field line in the second to open up a 5-0 lead.

If this wasn’t enough, the home team left no doubt in the third with a barrage of seven runs, which included three separate two-run hits — a single from Preston Conners and doubles from Matt Evans and Tyler Bergkoetter. Matt Baker capped off the rally with an RBI triple.

Dalton Dydak came on in relief to get the remaining three outs and secure the no-hitter.

The senior-heavy Firebirds advanced in hopes of capturing their second state title in three years. They won the championship in 2024 when most of the players were sophomores.

For the Tigers, losing is never easy to swallow, but head coach Brian Polaha knew how monumental of an obstacle his team was up against.

“They’re as talented as a team we’ve played all year, and this is the (best) pitcher we’ve seen all year,” he said. “We were a little overwhelmed, especially because we’re a pretty young team.

“I told our guys before the game they’re definitely way more experienced.”

The season for Northwestern may be over, along with the varsity careers of the senior class, but Polaha couldn’t help but express his gratitude for the team making it this far after the highs and lows they experienced during the year, including the district playoffs.

“Last year, we had a lot of seniors,” he said. “We had a lot of good players; a lot of three-year starters. We lost a lot of guys this year. We had a lot of people have to step in and learn on the fly, and we did enough to get to the playoffs, and we did enough to get to districts. It doesn’t matter what we did to get there.

“A lot of our guys offensively didn’t do as well as they thought, the path had us still on par. Those guys have been fantastic to coach. The best part about it is they’re as good as people as they are baseball players. As a coach, winning games is fantastic, but you want to win with the right character guys and the right kids.”

SENIOR CONTRIBUTIONS ... Northwestern will see four members of the baseball team graduate this spring: Ethan Konyak, Carter Christman, Cannon Fitch and Griffin Unrath. “I’m so proud of those guys; I can’t thank those guys enough,” Polaha said about the seniors. “We needed our best players to be our best players during this stretch. Back-to-back district championships is all we could ask for.”

NEXT CHALLENGE … Holy Ghost Prep will take on Mid-Valley in the quarterfinal round on Thursday. Mid-Valley came back from a late deficit to defeat East Pennsboro 7-6 in its first-round game.
