Cancer patients thank community
Two area women battling cancer are thankful — and forever grateful — for the help they’ve been receiving.
“The community support has been unbelievable for both of these ladies,” said Jennifer Miller, who recently organized fundraisers for Heather Yocum and Jenn (Baddick) Land.
Yocum, of Tamaqua, was diagnosed with Advanced Stage 3 pancreatic cancer, and Land, a Tamaqua native, is fighting Stage 3 breast cancer.
Miller is hoping that donations to the GoFundMe fundraisers will continue to roll in as the women carry on with their cancer fights. The dollars have helped both women so much already, she said, but since they’re currently unable to work, finances remain tight, Miller said.
“The financial burden on the two of them now is overwhelming,” Miller said.
Miller started a fundraiser for Yocum at https://www.gofundme.com/f/hometown-heroes-for-heather.
She also established one for Land at https://www.gofundme.com/f/bust-out-your-buck-for-jenn-battle-with-breast-cancer. She is asking for even just a dollar from anyone who can help.
Thanks to the donations, Yocum was able to receive specialty radiation, which Miller said is only available at 10 sites across the nation.
Yocum stayed at the Hope Lodge in New York while she underwent radiation at the David H. Koch Center for Cancer Care at Memorial Sloan Kettering.
“She is feeling pretty good. She is in much less pain than she was, but she is just very nauseous and tired,” Miller said.
Yocum will need to return to New York for follow-up treatment.
“That’s why we need the GoFundMe to continue — to help her get up to New York one last time,” Miller said.
Donations will be used for transportation and other related costs.
Miller noted that Land completed chemotherapy and radiation.
“She’s hanging in there. Jenn has been very, very sick and they have not been able to adjust her medicine properly,” Miller said.
She said that Land hasn’t been able to work for the last nine months because of her health.
“Financially, Jenn is in jeopardy of losing a lot of things,” Miller said.
She stressed that the community’s help to date has helped both women tremendously.
“We’re just trying to rally up the community one last time to give one last push to get them through this,” according to Miller.
The goal is for Yocum, Land and Miller, who is a cancer survivor, to attend upcoming American Cancer Society Relay for Life events.
“We’re going to make it. All three of us will be there,” Miller promised. “We are going to make that (survivors’) lap.”
Miller also encouraged folks to donate to their local branch of the American Cancer Society. The funds remain in the area and help people like Land and Yocum.
The donations help with rides to appointments, wigs, groceries, gift cards for gas and more, she said. They also help pay for overnight stays at Hope Lodges, where Yocum has stayed.
