Because of 10 alleged violations of the state fire and panic law, the Hazleton Area School District has been ordered to close the second floor of the Beaver Meadows School, effective immediately, and the entire facility next month.
The closing order was issued by state inspectors and will remain in effect until corrections are made to the claimed fire hazards.
Russell Dugan, supervisor for the state Department of Labor and Industry, said because of the discrepancies found in the 53-year-old structure, occupancy would be permitted only on the first floor of the building for the remainder of the school year, and the school will remain closed after the school year until “necessary corrections” are made.
