S. Hill councilwoman resigns, applications accepted
A member of Summit Hill Borough Council announced her resignation Tuesday night.
Lacey Gonzalez, who has served on the council since January 2024, resigned effective April 22. She said in a letter to the council the reason is to “focus on other professional and personal priorities.”
Gonzalez chaired two committees of the council: the building committee and the economic development committee. She also served on the sanitation committee.
The council said it will accept applications for her seat until 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 28. A meeting of the council will be held at 6:30 p.m. on May 28 during which the council hopes to name her successor.
It was one of several personnel matters discussed.
The council also accepted the resignation of Jeffrey Szczecina from the Coaldale-Lansford-Summit Hill Sewer Authority.
Szczecina, a former mayor in the borough, said he is resigning because he is moving to Centre County.
Any resident of the borough interested in Szczecina’s seat can apply to the borough by 4 p.m. on May 28.
Jarod Afflerbach of Palmerton was hired and sworn-in as a part-time police officer. Afflerbach, 27, is a 2016 graduate of Parkland High School and a 2024 graduate of the Allentown Police Academy. He was honorably discharged after eight years of service with the National Guard.
He has certifications including CPR, first aid, AED and firearms and patrol rifle instructor.
It was agreed to advertise for applicants for the position of full-time police officer.
In other business:
• Borough Secretary/Treasurer Kira Steber reminded resident that electronic recycling will occur on Saturday from 7-11 a.m. at the Ginder Field. The recycling is for borough residents only, with proof of identification required.
• The council agreed to allow Panther Valley School District to hold its summer food program twice a week in the gazebo at Ludlow Park.
• It was agreed to permit the relocation of a special purpose sign for the Midas Touch when the business relocates to 41-43 W. Ludlow St., which is across the street from the hair salon’s present location.
• Tabled was a request for a van accessible handicapped parking spot and sign for the business pending further review.
Council member Marlene Basiago said an application will be submitted for a grant to fund various parks projects. She said the grant would be in the amount of $10,000 and if approved, would provide for four trash receptacles at a borough park, mulch for the playgrounds as well as for Ludlow Park and improvements to a walking track.
