Pigs column: Big week for Kemp
Fans at Coca-Cola Park were able to see the International League Player of the Week during the last homestand.
No, it wasn’t Otto Kemp, despite having a big week at the plate. Instead, it was R.J. Schreck of the Buffalo Bisons.
Schreck was an absolute ogre at the plate and devoured IronPigs pitchers, as the 25-year-old outfield prospect hit .600 (15-for-25) with hits in all six games of the series. He also drove in 16 runs and scored nine runs during the series. Schreck came into the series on a cold streak after going 0-for-16 at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre prior to facing Lehigh Valley.
Schreck came into town with a .146 average and 11 RBIs, and headed back to Buffalo with a .240 average and 27 RBIs.
Kemp hit .292 (7-for-24) in the series. In the series opener, he tied a franchise record with seven runs driven in thanks to a pair of home runs — a grand slam and a three-run shot — that helped Lehigh Valley to a 7-5 win. Two nights later, Kemp hit his third home run of the season and drove in four more runs for the IronPigs.
In 18 games since being optioned to Lehigh Valley from the Phillies, Kemp has driven in 19 runs and is batting .258.
Manager Tank Adamson was impressed with Kemp’s attitude since being optioned down.
“He’s been professional; everything I thought he would be for us,” said Adamson. “He’s getting regular playing time, and I think that has helped him get his swing back.”
Kemp played four of the games in left field, and the other two at third base for Lehigh Valley.
Buffalo took four of the six games at CCP last week. After a fast start to the season, the IronPigs have won just three times in their last nine games, dropping them to 19-20 on the season.
They are currently tied with Charlotte and Buffalo for sixth place in the International League East, three games behind Worcester (21-16).
A TWO-TIMING PHILLIES PROSPECT ... For the second time in three weeks, Clearwater’s Alirio Ferrebus has been named the Florida State League Player of the Week. Ferrebus hit .550 (11-for-20) in five games against Daytona Beach, including a two-home run game in which he drove in five runs. He had two games during the series where he had four hits, and drove in a total of nine runs throughout the week.
SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO? ... Staring pitcher Alan Rangel was in somewhat of a holding pattern Saturday night. He was supposed to be the starter Saturday night, but that plan was put on hold about 30 minutes before game time. A call from Philadelphia put Rangel on the shelf because with back-to-back games where their starters — Jesus Luzardo and Andrew Painter — had short, unsuccessful outings, the Phillies were worried that Aaron Nola would make it three straight and leave the team in need of a fresh arm for Sunday. Nola only lasted 4.2 innings, but it was enough that with Cristopher Sanchez set to pitch Sunday, the Phillies decided they would not need Rangel. So, Rangel was given the go-ahead to pitch, and entered the game in the fifth inning rather than starting. He threw five innings for Lehigh Valley.
ARRIVALS AND DEPARTURES ... Outfielder Oscar Mercado was released by the Phillies on Monday. After having a strong season with Lehigh Valley last season, including stealing 40 bases, Mercado hit just .141 this season. The roster has plenty of outfielders, so Mercado was cut loose. The team also needed a roster spot. Pitcher Grant Holman was claimed off waivers from Detroit and joined the team over the weekend. On Sunday, the Phillies claimed Jackson Rutledge, who was put on waivers by Washington. Rutledge was designated for assignment when the Nationals needed a roster spot for Max Kranick. The former first round pick has struggled at the major league level, but was 1-1, 3.38 in 13 relief outings with Triple-A Rochester this season.
LOCAL GUY UPDATE ... Former Parkland and IronPigs pitcher Gabe Mosser signed a minor league deal with Seattle over the winter and is pitching for Triple-A Tacoma. The 29-year-old was named the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Month for April. Mosser was 2-1 with a 2.21 ERA in five starts and one relief appearance during the month. Northwestern Lehigh grad Rafe Perich is playing well at High-A Hub City in the Texas Rangers organization. Perich is playing primarily at first base for the Spartanburgers — yes, that’s the team’s nickname — and is hitting .277/.358/.506/.864 with four home runs and 17 RBIs in 23 games.
