Op-ed: Unleashing record refunds for Poconos taxpayers
This year, as we come to the end of tax season, millions of American workers, families and small business owners are seeing the real results of the Working Families Tax Cuts that Congressional Republicans and President Donald Trump delivered.
Across the country, this legislation is putting more money back into the pockets of every American — boosting refunds, increasing take-home pay and delivering the relief that our communities deserve.
The average tax refund is up significantly this year (nearly 11%), and millions of Americans are seeing an immediate boost in their paychecks as they adjust withholdings to reflect the lower tax rate.
These tax savings are made possible by the provisions of the Working Families Tax Cuts, which finally deliver for the American people after years of earnings and savings being eaten away by inflation.
That starts with seniors, who can now benefit from a $6,000 bonus deduction for individuals and $12,000 for joint filers. Because of this new deduction, 88% of seniors will now pay zero federal tax on Social Security.
So far, more than 26 million taxpayers have claimed No Tax on Social Security — giving them the savings they deserve after a lifetime of paying into the system.
We went further by providing critical new tax benefits for working Americans. Tax relief for overtime means that hardworking Poconos residents who put in long hours will get to keep more of the money they’ve earned.
No tax on tips provides new relief for the waitresses, delivery drivers and more who we count on every day — plus the knowledge that your tip is going to workers, not the federal government.
More than 23 million Americans have claimed the No Tax on Overtime provision while over 5 million taxpayers have benefited from No Tax on Tips.
We didn’t forget about parents, either. From my first day in Congress, I’ve been working to deliver the real relief that working families deserve.
That started with the first package of bills that I introduced, which included provisions like an increased Child Tax Credit and expansions of the child and dependent care tax credit.
I was able to secure provisions like these in the Working Families Tax Cuts — giving millions of parents a Child Tax Credit that’s permanently increased to $2,200 (it had been set to fall back to $1,000) and major expansions of child care tax credits.
Our local economies are seeing benefits too because of investments in the small businesses that keep the Poconos thriving.
Nearly 12 million small business owners nationwide are seeing an average tax reduction of nearly $7,000, while the permanent extension of the 20% Qualified Business Income deduction is delivering $4,600 in average relief to eight million entrepreneurs.
After years of being crushed by inflation, local small business owners are getting the relief that they deserve — helping them to grow, hire and invest right here in our communities.
Finally, we delivered relief for every American by increasing the standard deduction by $750 ($1,500 for joint filers). That means larger refunds for everyone in our community before we even consider any of the additional credits and deductions.
For months, I’ve been hearing from you about what these savings mean for you. People throughout our community have told us about the larger returns that you’ve received and what it means for your family. For so many of you, it’s meant a chance to invest in the future, make a down payment or support a loved one.
Delivering tax relief for every single American is step one in the fight to reduce the cost of living and unleash prosperity in our communities.
Now, we need to continue building on these successes — investing in workers, families and small businesses. As your representative in Congress for the Lehigh Valley and the Poconos, I’ll keep working to deliver real results that reduce the cost of living and enhance prosperity.
