Bombers fall to Blue Mtn.

ORWIGSBURG — The Palmerton tennis team returned to the postseason Monday afternoon in the District 11 Class 2A team tournament quarterfinals.

Unfortunately for the Bombers, the result mirrored each of their last three tournament openers, as the No. 5 seed fell 4-1 to fourth-seeded Blue Mountain on the road.

“They gave it their all today. They played their best,” Palmerton coach Jen Danzeisen said. “I saw a lot of good shots, a lot of effort. I just think we couldn’t pull it off because they were the better team.

“Blue Mountain is a good, solid team. They deserve to move on, and now they get to play Moravian Academy. I do feel they have a good shot against them, too.”

The Eagles advance to face Colonial League champion Moravian Academy in the semifinals. The top-seeded Lions moved on with a 5-0 win over No. 8 seed Palisades.

At No. 1 singles, Palmerton’s Levi Johnson faced Blue Mountain’s Evan Burcik in a rematch of their District 11 Class 2A singles tournament meeting. Burcik, the eventual runner-up, again controlled the match, winning 6-0, 6-0.

“Going into this match, I knew their No. 1 was very good because Levi played him in districts,” Danzeisen said. “Levi is always my ‘comeback kid.’ In the second set, he usually finds a way to pull out games out of nowhere.

“He could lose the first set 0-6, and then come back and win the second set 6-4. I was hoping that was the case today, but it wasn’t.”

One bright spot for Palmerton came from senior Colton Ruzicka, who closed his varsity career with a win. He defeated Blue Mountain’s Elias Eichert 6-4, 6-4.

In what Danzeisen called one of his “best matches of the season,” Ruzicka finished strong in his final outing.

“Colton came out strong and played consistently,” Danzeisen said. “I was just happy that he ended his career with a win. Even Anderson started off well — he had more games than his opponent at No. 3 singles. But in the second set, he started making some unforced errors at the net.”

Garcia-Escobar fell 6-4, 6-2.

Palmerton dropped both doubles matches, as the teams of Kevin O’Neill/Chase Sebelin and Hadlee Lake/Andrea Bettini were unable to translate their practice performance into postseason play.

As the Bombers left the courts, Danzeisen reflected on the season and what it takes to improve.

“Even though we didn’t make it past this round, it was a really ‘feel-good’ season,” Danzeisen said. “At the end of the day, the key is really all about practicing. The only way they can get better is if they continue to play throughout the summer.

“And if they can find an indoor court, play a little more. It’s just like any other sport — the more you play, the better you are. I think having the seniors as leaders, they’ll all take away some pride and school spirit as well.”

PAST APPEARANCES ... Danzeisen has coached the program for nine years, and has led the Bombers to the District 11 Class 2A Team Tournament three times (2026, 2023, 2018). In 2023, the No. 8 seed Bombers lost 3-0 to top-seeded Moravian Academy. In 2018, the No. 6 seed fell 4-1 to Notre Dame-Green Pond.

ENOUGH TO MAKE ONE SMILE ... “I always say this about our kids — they’re positive. They don’t have egos. They just know how to have fun,” Danzeisen said. “Yes, they’re hard on themselves, but they care about each other and help each other correct mistakes. They laugh with each other, but they don’t put each other down, and I think that’s key.”

UNIQUE OCCURRENCE ... Danzeisen noted that Andrea Bettini, an exchange student from Italy, had the chance to play against Blue Mountain’s Tomas Lopez, a student from Spain. “He made friends wherever we went. He got the chance to play against him today, so that was kind of cool,” Danzeisen said.
