Local funds, grants sought for park project

The committee working to improve Summit Hill Memorial Park is seeking funding from several sources.

An appeal letter was sent to borough residents. In additions, several grants are being sought.

The former Old Presbyterian Cemetery, it was rededicated as Summit Hill Community Memorial Park in 1974.

The letter to residents said that besides donations and grants, the committee is seeking sponsorships for benches and pavers.

Marlene Basiago of the committee to improve the park said the first phase is to add benches, pavers and install solar lamp posts along the walkway.

In addition, the deteriorating wall will be cleaned, missing stones will be replaced in the wall, and cracks and holes in the wall will be repaired.

The final phase will involve erecting a large plaque at the center of the walkway to commemorate the history of the park and cemetery and add small plaques and monuments within the park.

Basiago, chair of the committee to improve the park, said the cost of a plain bench is $1,100, while a memorialized bench costs $1,600.

The price of memorializing a 6-inch by 9-inch paver is $100.

To make a donation or create a memorial, mail the check (indicate Memorial Park on it) to Summit Hill Borough, 40 W. Amidon St., Summit Hill, PA 18250, or make a donation to the Carbon County Community Foundation at cccfoundpa.org/summit-hill-parks-fund/.

“Our goal is to transform Memorial Park into a welcoming and vibrant space that offers residents and tourists a chance to explore the cemetery’s rich history, connect with nature, friends and family, and relish the outdoors,” Basiago said.
