Tigers girls lacrosse team cruises past Moravian

NW girls lacrosse rolls 25-5

Sometimes, when it rains, it pours.

That’s what Moravian Academy must have been thinking when the rain started to fall at Tiger Stadium Thursday night.

They were already being trounced by Northwestern Lehigh and now, they had to deal with rain.

For the Tigers and their young fans who were there for Youth Night, it was all just part of the experience.

Northwestern rolled to a 25-5 win, with 14 different players scoring goals.

Ella Collins led Northwestern with four goals. Cali Colistra and Liv Fagan both had three in the win while Skyler Dion, Haley Kerschner, Madelyn Lagowy and M.K. Yanders each scored twice.

Maddy Breidinger, Mandy Breidinger, Ella Filipovits, Gracie Scheffler, Ella Schmidt, Hayden Schmidt and Ashley Yacynych all scored single goals for the Tigers.

It’s the fourth win in the last five games for Northwestern, a team that is coming together at just the right time.

“It took us a little while to get into our rhythm this season, but now that we’re in it, we’re just firing on all ends,” said Collins, a junior attacker.

“We did really well on our transitions, and we’re taking what we do in practice and seeing it in games now.”

With an 8-6 record and four games remaining on the regular season schedule, Northwestern has a definite path back to the District 11 playoffs.

A season ago, the Tigers went into districts as the No. 3 seed in 2A, upset Allentown Central Catholic and advanced to the finals. In an 8-7 battle, the Tigers fell to Southern Lehigh, keeping them from winning the program’s first district championship.

Earlier this season, Southern Lehigh defeated Northwestern 12-6, but the two teams have another game set against each other coming up on Monday. This time the Spartans come to Tiger Stadium for the matchup, and Northwestern is ready for them.

“That’s definitely a big game,” said Fagan, another junior on the team. “We remember losing in districts and this season, too. We definitely didn’t play our best against them before, but we will be showing up on Monday. We have improved a lot since we played them, and we’re excited to get back at it.”

The game gave youth players the opportunity not just to watch a varsity game up close, but to be a part of the team experience. The young players were in the pre-game team huddle, got some on-the-field training from the Northwestern varsity players during halftime, and then got to collect autographs from the players postgame.

“They were in our pre-game speech, and their eyes just lit up. They were up close for warm-ups and our girls played around with them at halftime, so it was great,” said coach Pam Colistra.

“It was the second year that we did this, and they really get excited to see all of this up close, and see how great it is to get to play varsity and be involved with a team.”

THE REST OF THE WAY ... In addition to the rematch with Southern Lehigh (10-3), the Tigers play at Saucon Valley (6-7), another district qualifier from last season. They also have another game against Moravian Academy (0-14), and finish their schedule against Scranton Prep. The Colonial League does not have enough teams to sanction lacrosse, so the Tigers go directly into district play without having to play through a league tournament.
