Coroner released ID of bicyclist killed near Jim Thorpe

The Carbon County Coroner’s office has released the name of the man killed in a bicycle crash Monday morning along Route 209 in Mahoning Township.

Chris M. Sommers 41, no known address, was pronounced deceased at the scene of an accident involving a bicycle at 7:30 a.m. on Route 209 commonly referred to as the Mansion House hill.

The manner of death has been ruled an accident.

Due to the circumstances surrounding this death, a forensic autopsy was conducted on Tuesday by Forensic Pathology Associates at the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office & Forensics Center in Allentown.

The Carbon County Coroner’s Office was requested to respond to the scene on Monday at 6:54 a.m., after a worker arriving at a construction site discovered the body.

Sommers was operating a bicycle that struck a piece of construction machinery.

During the investigation, there was no evidence to suggest that Sommers was struck by another vehicle; he was the sole individual and vehicle involved in the incident.

The Carbon County Coroner’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Carbon County District Attorney’s Office, Jim Thorpe Police Department, and Mahoning Township Police Department.
