Local Roundup: Results from April 18

Tamaqua and Marian both gained wins in both baseball and softball over the weekend.

The Blue Raiders defeated Lehighton in both, while the Colts downed Palisades and the Fillies knocked off Mahanoy Area.

BASEBALL

Lehighton-Tamaqua

Jake Yenser hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning that helped Tamaqua defeat Lehighton, 5-3, in non-league action.

Lehighton took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second on Chase Llewellyn’s RBI single after the Indians had scored two runs in the first.

Tamaqua tied the game at 3-3 in bottom of the fifth on Gavin Edmonds’ run-scoring double.

Yenser added a pair of stolen bases and Landon Kamant went 2-for-3 for the Blue Raiders, who snapped a three-game losing skid.

Brock Atwood and Braylon Hunsicker each added an RBI for Lehighton, which dropped its third straight.

Jayden Rex picked up the win in relief, scattering five hits over 5 1/3 innings.

Marian-Palisades

Noah Bauder’s two-run single in the bottom of the third inning broke a tie, and Marian went on to post an 11-7 non-league victory over Palisades.

With the game tied at 4-4, Bauder — who went 2-for-4 with three RBIs — helped the Colts take control of the game with their three-run inning.

Earlier, Roman Bednarek — who also had two hits and three RBIs — had an RBI single in the first and a two-run double in the second that staked the Colts to a 4-1 lead before Palisades rallied.

Jason Ashfield added two hits for Marian, which won its third straight. Ashfield had three of the Colts’ nine stolen bases while Chase Quinn-Gutsie had three walks, scored three runs and stole two bases.

Chase Grier pitched 5 1/3 innings in relief to pick up the win.

Jim Thorpe-Pottsville

Pottsville jumped out to an early lead, and the Crimson Tide rolled to a 15-0 shutout over Jim Thorpe in non-league play.

The Crimson Tide pushed across four runs in the first inning, and built an 8-0 advantage after three innings. Dominic Rynard had two hits and drove in four runs for Pottsville.

Jim Thorpe managed just four hits, as Noah Pastor, Tyler Hoherchak, Zack Murphy and Brody Schrantz each collected one.

Northern Lehigh-Hamburg

Northern Lehigh staged a late rally, but it wasn’t enough as the Bulldogs fell to Hamburg, 5-2.

Hamburg brought a 5-0 lead into the top of the seventh when Northern Lehigh’s Jayden Christman and Chris Vargas both drove in runs to cut the margin to three, but their comeback ended.

Christman and Pablo Rivera each had two hits for the Bulldogs.

Jaden Ryan allowed eight hits and two runs with seven strikeouts and two walks in a complete-game victory for Hamburg.

Pleasant Valley-Freedom

Freedom plated two runs in the top of the ninth inning to push past Pleasant Valley, 5-3, in EPC action.

Pleasant Valley tied the game in the home sixth on an error and Ty Borger’s two-run triple.

Brayden Green went 2-for-3 and stole two bases, and Owen Walters drew two walks for the Bears, who had five hits.

SOFTBALL

Lehighton-Tamaqua

A four-run third inning helped lift Tamaqua to a 6-4 non-league victory over visiting Lehighton.

Molly Evans delivered an RBI double in the third to give the Raiders a lead, and Sophia Sitlinger added a run-scoring single. Ceanna Gormley also tripled and raced home on a wild pitch.

Mia Bamford had a pair of hits and a run for Tamaqua, which has won four of its last six games.

Winning pitcher Peyton Faust finished with 10 strikeouts, while Naomi Knitter tossed two scoreless frames, fanning four, to earn the save.

For the Indians, Sophia Wise had two doubles and a run while Peyton Hausman finished with a pair of hits — one a double — and an RBI.

Mahanoy Area-Marian

Marian ended a four-game losing streak with a 6-1 non-league victory over Mahanoy Area.

Malina Letcher drilled a two-run homer in the fifth inning for the Fillies, who also received a strong pitching performance from Emily Upanavage. The Marian hurler tossed a four-hitter, allowing just one run and two walks while striking out five.

The winner also received a hit, run and RBI from Hailey Treskolasky.

TRACK

So. Lehigh Invitational

Kayden Spence, Gavin Strohl and Isabella Roman each recorded first-place finishes in their respective events for Jim Thorpe at the Southern Lehigh Invitational.

Spence led the field in the 400 in a time of 49.90, and was third in the 100 (11.46). Strohl bested the field in the discus (140-1.5), and Roman had the top throw in the javelin (115-3).

Recording third-place finishes for the Olympian boys in their respective events were Pierce Gothard (high jump; 5-9); Samuel Epps (triple jump; 39-4); Benjamin Remmel (110 hurdles; 17.78), Spencer Gothard (300 hurdles; 41.94), and Samuel Masucci (pole vault; 10-9).

On the girls side, Logan Gillespie was second in the 3200 (11:47.17) and third in the 1600 (5:30.25). Vannessa Sadler was third in the shot put (31-5.5). The Thorpe boys 1600 relay team took first in a time of 3:26.18. Taking second were the boys 400 relay team (41.8) and the girls 1600 relay squad (4:28). The Olympians’ girls 400 relay was third (53.73).

Red & Black Invite

Pleasant Valley was one of 35 schools that participated in the Red & Black Invitational at East Stroudsburg University.

The Bears received a second-place finish from Alexandra DePalma in the pole vault, clearing 10-0. The PV girls also took a second in the 3200 relay, crossing in 11:01.02.

Uriah Gearhart earned a third place in the boys triple jump with a distance of 44-1 1/4. Pleasant Valley’s 3200 boys relay also gained a fourth place with a mark of 9:01.72.

Other PV individuals ending in the top eight included Kylie Fuentes (seventh in javelin), Ava Oviedo (seventh in long jump) and Sofia Aspioti (eighth in discus).

Pine Grove Invitational

Five Times News area individuals won their events at Friday’s Pine Grove Invitational.

Marian’s Jake Tom led local athletes with a pair of firsts at the event, which featured 23 schools.

Tom captured the long jump with a distance of 20-11, and bettered the field in the triple jump with a mark of 40-8.

Tamaqua and Northern Lehigh both had a pair of champions.

The Raiders’ Shaylee Gormley crossed first in the 800 in 2:26.45, while Katelynn Fredericks turned in a time of 49.30 to win the 300 hurdles.

The Bulldogs also collected a pair of wins from Evelina Mayak and Kellen Bauer. Mayak took the 100 hurdles in 15.88, while Bauer cleared 6-0 to gain gold in the high jump.

Northern Lehigh’s Emma Heil added a pair of runner-up finishes in the 1600 and 3200. Fellow Bulldog Natalie Moffitt was second in the 400.

BOYS TENNIS

Blue Mtn.-Pleasant Vy.

In both team’s regular season finale, Blue Mountain gained a 5-1 non-league victory over Pleasant Valley.

The Bears’ John Hargrave earned a hard-fought win at No. 1 singles.
