Carbon County Commissioners

The Carbon County commissioners acted on the following items this month:

• Approved agreements with Robert Miller of Nesquehoning, Suzette Kurtz of Lehighton and Raymond Donnelly of Jim Thorpe to serve as roving troubleshooters during the May 19 and Nov. 3 elections. They will be paid $200 a day plus 60 cents per mile.

• Approved an award of funding for $90,000 from the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency for the county’s Intermediate Punishment program. The grant partially covers the salary of one adult probation officer and treatment court administrative assistant, electronic monitoring equipment, supplies and treatment services from July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026.

• Approved a proposal with High Mountain Hardward Inc. of McAdoo to replace a storm door at the animal shelter at a cost of $3,450.98. Donations are being utilized for the cost.

• Ratified the appointment of Carol Etheridge of Mahoning Township to serve as a public elected official representative for the Carbon County Action Committee for Human Services board of directors. Etheridge is a Mahoning Township supervisor.

• Accepted an estimate from Shawn Kresge Services Inc. of Jim Thorpe to repair the electrical connection to the administration building parking lot lights and add a ground fault circuit interrupter at a cost of $1,257.89.

• Accepted the estimate with A&W Plumbing & Heating of Nesquehoning to remove a cast iron boiler and replace an expansion tank and relief valve, as well as install a 50 gallon electrical water heater in the district court office in Lansford. The cost is $10,600.

• Ratified an estimate with Fisher Services of Loysville for an above ground propane tank and regulator at the Emergency Operations and Training Center at a cost of $5,165.04, which will be reimbursed by the county fire association.

• Approved the termination of a Blue Ridge Communications agreement for bundled telephone and internet services at four senior centers and entered into a five-year agreement with PenTeleData for broadband internet and phone services at the same senior centers. The monthly cost is $315 with a non-recurring fee of $638. Weatherly senior center is not included in the agreement.

• Approved an application submission to PCoRP, the county’s insurance carrier, for up to $25,000 from the loss prevention grant funds. The money would cover GPS services in county vehicles, three stair evacuation chairs, 34 rescue quiklitter, 300 CPR face masks and various medical supplies to restock medical kits. The estimated cost is $14,899.03.

• Approved a funding award for $69,300 for the Juvenile Probation Services program grant through the Juvenile Court Judges’ Commission for salary reimbursements.

• Approved a request from Lehighton Area School District for $19,120 from Opioid Settlement funds to fund the Summer BRAVE Camp. The three-day a week camp for three weeks is aimed at educating students on the dangers of opioid use and building resilience against trying the drugs. $10,000 has been released with the stipulation that a detailed expense sheet be submitted at the end of the program for the remaining funds.

• Ratified U.S. Sens. David McCormick and John Fetterman for 2027 Congressionally Directed Spending request applications in the amount of $1,835,074 to help in purchasing portable radios for emergency responders as part of the county’s changeover to digital radios.

• Lease agreement with Tricia Snisky of Jim Thorpe for the operation of the camp store at Mauch Chunk Lake Park, through March 31, 2029, with the total rent for the term of the lease being $3,833 plus $400 annually for electric.

• Adopted a resolution acknowledging Dinkey Evangelical Lutheran Church’s 175th anniversary.

• Maintenance agreement with Tyler Technologies of Moraine, Ohio, for coverage in the county tax assessment office for $21,755, from July 1 though June 31, 2027.
