Raiders down PV in shortened game
It wasn’t the most conventional chapter of a longtime Schuylkill League rivalry, but it still counts as one.
Panther Valley welcomed Tamaqua on Tuesday in a critical matchup in the District 11 Class 4A softball standings. The Raiders entered as the No. 7 seed, while the Panthers sat just outside the playoff picture at No. 9.
A combination of strong pitching and steady offense in each inning helped Tamaqua build a lead Panther Valley could not overcome. The game ended early due to lightning in the sixth inning, resulting in an official 8-3 win for the visiting Raiders under the mercy rule.
Adding to the unconventional nature of the game, Panthers assistant coach Pauline Romanowski stepped in as acting head coach in place of Tara Yurichek, who was unavailable.
A seventh-grade teacher who has had members of the team as students, Romanowski found herself in an unfamiliar role, now leading those same players in a high-pressure situation.
“It was very nerve-wracking, and I never realized the difference between being an assistant and being the head coach, with all of the choices and decisions on you,” she said. “I typically work infield with the girls on defensive stuff, a little bit with the batting, and encouraging them. I came on last minute this season when there was an opening, so I’m still learning the ropes of how the team operates, what to expect from the girls, and the kinds of athletes they are and how far to push them.”
Unfortunately for Romanowski and the Panthers, it was a rough start.
On the first pitch of the game, Ceanna Gormley launched a towering home run over the center-field wall off PV pitcher Paige Goida to spark Tamaqua’s offense. An RBI groundout by Naomi Knitter extended the lead to 2-0 and set the tone, as the Raiders plated two runs in each of the first four innings. Two runs in the second, third, and fourth stretched the advantage to 8-1 after four innings.
Not to be overshadowed by the offense, Peyton Faust turned in a strong outing in the circle for Tamaqua. Coming off a recent milestone of 100 career strikeouts, the sophomore added seven more and got help from her defense when needed to keep the Panthers in check.
For Raiders head coach Tony Zancofsky, the depth of his pitching staff — led by sophomores Peyton Faust and Naomi Knitter, who pitched Monday against Hamburg — has been a valuable asset.
“It’s very fortunate that I have two pitchers — realistically four pitchers. Bumbulsky can come in at any time and so can Gormley,” Zancofsky said. “I’m very fortunate. Peyton pitched well today, hit her spots, got into a little trouble here and there but got out of it. With the defense, it makes a big difference.”
Before the lightning arrived, Tamaqua appeared ready to end the game early on its own. A six-run outburst in the sixth stretched the Raiders’ lead to 14-3, but those runs were wiped away when the game was called, with the final score reverting to 8-3 after five innings.
Not including the six unofficial runs, Gormley still went 2-for-3 with a home run and two runs scored. Nico Conahan drove in a run on a sacrifice fly, and Abbey Whitehead came off the bench to deliver a two-run single.
While Zancofsky appreciated the offensive output, he hopes to see more consistency from his lineup.
“You never know which team is going to show up here from Tamaqua, but we showed up today,” he said. “There’s still things we need to work on, though. The pitching does keep us in games, but we need to hit.”
PANTHERS PLATE… Ava Alabovitz drove in two runs for Panther Valley, while Janessa Prudente added the team’s third run with an RBI single.
SCHUYLKILL SHOWDOWN… Both teams return to action Thursday against Schuylkill League Division I opponents. Tamaqua will host Pottsville, while Panther Valley travels to face Blue Mountain, which suffered its first loss of the season Tuesday, 5-3 to Pine Grove.
