Palmerton residents question parking restrictions, fees

Palmerton Borough Council recently fielded concerns about parking.

Residents Peter Hrusovsky and Kniechelle Kauffman, who live on Avenue A, voiced concerns regarding how many vehicles need to park, and how it makes it difficult to follow restrictions for seasonal parking, such as for street sweeping.

Hrusovsky questioned the fee being raised to $30.

Council President Terry Costenbader told the couple that the borough has an ordinance, the police do the ticketing, and are following the ordinance.

Councilman Andrew Hollywood suggested they try to utilize borough parking lots.

But Kauffman said they have children, “so that’s going to be very hard for us.”

Hollywood said, “It’s a simple matter of the area outgrew itself.”

Kauffman said there are some residents, such as themselves, who do try to work with the borough.

After the meeting, borough Manager Autumn Canfield said the matter falls under the vehicle and traffic ordinance, specifically the seasonal parking restrictions.

Canfield said parking tickets are a $30 fine, and added the fee was changed in September of 2022.

“It was increased due to noncompliance with the regulations,” she said.

Canfield said the borough’s street sweeping schedule officially began Wednesday.
