200 join ‘No Kings’ rally in Jim Thorpe

On Saturday, an estimated 8 million people protested in what is called “No Kings” rallies around the United States and the world to protest President Donald Trump and the war in Iran.

More than 3,300 protests were held around the world.

Linda Carlson of Lansford said, “The first four amendments, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the United States, he violated them.”

In Carbon County, about 200 people gathered around the Courthouse Annex building, lined up across the front and side of the building, plus more across the street, holding up banners, signs and flags.

Similar events were held in Stroudsburg and the Lehigh Valley.

“It’s about voicing our First Amendment rights. It’s about speaking out against the current trend in our government to run the place not like a democratic republic, but sort of like a fascist authoritarian government,” said Bob Fahringer of Lehighton. “We don’t think that’s the way to be doing things, by presidential edict.”

Midge Heiser coordinated the rally to coincide with the worldwide movement.

U.S. organizers had estimated that the first two rounds of No Kings rallies drew more than 5 million people in June and 7 million in October.

On Saturday, they estimated that at least 8 million participants took part in the events worldwide. Protests were held on six continents. None were held in Antarctica.
