An abandoned home that had been collapsed for some time caught fire Sunday afternoon in Mahoning Township.
Mahoning Valley fire Chief Mark Ebbert said firefighters were dispatched at 1:55 p.m. for a fire at 153 Mauch Chunk St. along Route 209 going through Packerton.
Ebbert said that upon arrival, firefighters encountered an old 2-story house that had previously collapsed (abandoned structure) within the last year or so.
“It was on fire, collapsed into the basement,” Ebbert said. “All the debris was just fully involved.”
Ebbert said it was the rubble and debris from the collapsed house that caught fire.
He said the fire was under control within an hour, but added firefighters remained on scene picking through the rubble for another two hours.
Ebbert said there were no injuries.
He said the cause of the fire has been listed as accidental.
Ebbert said also assisting at the scene were the Lehighton Fire Department, tankers from Jim Thorpe Fire Department and Franklin Township Fire Company, Mahoning Valley Ambulance, Mahoning Township Police Department, and the DCNR Bureau of Forestry. No one was injured.
