Lehighton shows depth in sweep

Early in the season, the results are only part of the story.

For Lehighton, though, the progress is already showing.

Sawyer Hoffman and Lilyana Shapiro each won three individual events and ran on winning 1600-meter relay teams as the Indians swept Northern Lehigh in a Colonial League meet Tuesday.

Lehighton won the boys meet 115-35 and the girls meet 102-43. The Indians’ girls improved to 2-0, while the boys moved to 1-1. Northern Lehigh’s boys and girls teams are both 1-1.

Hoffman, who entered the season simply looking to enjoy track and field, has quickly become one of Lehighton’s most reliable contributors after winning the 100, 200 and 400.

“I came in thinking this was just going to be my fun sport,” said Hoffman. “I actually wanted to be a jumper at first. Then my coaches moved me around, and I ended up sprinting.”

Now, the junior is doing a little bit of everything — and doing it well.

“I was definitely surprised I got first in all three events,” Hoffman said. “That was a good upside.”

For Hoffman, the 400 has quickly become a favorite.

“I like the 400 because you can pace yourself, but it’s still a sprint,” he said. “You need endurance and speed, and I love that combination.”

Lehighton’s strength, though, extended beyond the sprints.

Distance runner Elijah Pagotto matched that level of production, winning the 800, 1600 and 3200 while also running on the winning 3200-meter relay.

Lehighton’s depth continued to show across the lineup.

Equan Warner swept both hurdle events, winning the 110 and 300 hurdles.

“I’m trying to break the school record, which is 40.40,” Warner said of the 300 hurdles. “In season, I usually run around 42, so I’m trying to shave off about two seconds to get there.”

In the field, Owen Eckhart turned in one of the top performances of the meet, winning both the long jump and triple jump, highlighted by a personal-best leap.

“My PR last week was 20-9, and today I went 21-10, so that was a big jump for me,” Eckhart said of his mark in the long jump, which now ranks fourth in the state. “I think I can get 22 feet next week.”

Bodie Hawk added wins in both the shot put and discus to continue a strong start in both events. Hallie Miller also won both the shot put and discus for the Tribe in the girls meet.

“I worked really hard in the offseason and kind of became obsessed with it,” Hawk said. “It’s good to see the results coming through.”

On the girls side, Shapiro matched Hoffman’s effort, winning the 100, 200 and 400 while also running on the winning 1600 relay.

In the 400, the sophomore led a strong Lehighton finish, with teammate Cayley Reph placing second and Northern Lehigh’s Natalie Moffitt close behind.

“I knew going in she’s super fast,” Shapiro said of Moffitt. “I was excited to run against her and see if I could push myself.”

The 400, in particular, is where Shapiro feels most comfortable.

“If you mess up the beginning, you can make it up later,” she said. “I just try to have fun and push myself as hard as I can.”

Moffitt welcomed the opportunity to compete in that race.

“I was excited to get to run against her and see if I could push myself,” said Moffitt, who also won the high jump. “I just want to keep getting better every week.”

Lehighton’s Kennedy Quinn also delivered a strong effort in the 800, leading wire-to-wire to take the win.

“I was pretty nervous going in because I saw her time was faster than mine,” Quinn said of runner-up Emma Heil of Northern Lehigh. “But my goal was just to get out first, and thankfully I was able to do that.”

For Quinn, the mental side — shaped in part by wrestling — continues to play a key role.

“Once the gun went off, my mind just went blank, like in wrestling,” said Quinn, who was second in the shot put. “I just went out there and did my best.”

Northern Lehigh, meanwhile, showed its strength across the meet.

On the track, Evelina Mayak won the 100 hurdles as she continues her return from injury last season.

“It’s been a really hard journey,” said Mayak, a district champion in the event as a freshman and a runner-up as a sophomore. “I’m not back to where I used to be yet, but I think I’m getting there.”

Emma Heil added a win in the 1600, and is focused on building toward the postseason.

“I’m planning to focus more on the two-mile later in the season,” Heil said. “I’d like to be running low 12s, hopefully into the 11s.”

In the throwing events, the Bulldogs continue to build momentum.

Landen Klimek followed up last week’s school-record throw of 152 feet, 10 inches in the discus — which broke a 42-year-old mark — with a second-place finish in the event and a third in the shot put.

“That record stood for 42 years, so it was really exciting to see him break it,” Northern Lehigh throwing coach Derek Long said of the previous mark of 147-6 held by Chad Miller. “He’s been dedicated all offseason, and it paid off.”

Long said the group continues to build off that momentum.

“We take pride in it,” said Long, who saw William Slattery take second in the shot put for the Bulldogs. “We try to go one, two, three and score as many points as we can.”

That same mindset — improvement, patience and perspective — was shared across both sides of the track.

For Heil, the focus is simple in her final season.

“It’s my last year, so I want to have fun, but I also want to do well,” she said. “Last year I didn’t get to finish, so this time I just want to finish and be successful.”

Mayak understands that balance.

“I’m just trying to make the best of what I have,” Mayak said. “I know it’s not easy, but I’m trying.”
