Letter to the editor: Why we pushed for amusement tax

Anybody reading this letter will know my husband and I went to our township many months ago with the idea of an amusement tax.

We did not do this because of any personal benefit. Our concern was the township finding alternatives to revenue besides we the taxpayers.

The reason we thought of this was because Blue Mt. Resort became a year round venue with all kinds of entertainment with more showing up every year.

Skiing was no longer the only activity. (Spartan race, ranch festival, bike park, zip line, etc.) To make this clear — only events, excluding skiing, camping and Slopeside, would be affected.

Eliminating those venues reduces the income that can be taxed. Lower Towamensing Township really does an awesome job with the revenue they collect from us taxpayers. We are concerned if the revenue does not meet their expenses. We the taxpayers will be the ones to make up the difference.

That burden will fall on approximately 3,100 people, 785 being senior citizens. We would like to see the township gain a cushion in revenue. Fixing roads is expensive.

Blue Mt. offered support as a donation of labor and use of equipment. This could be more of a liability to the township instead of help. Who covers possible injuries to BM employees and repair to their equipment?

If you are a resident of Lower Towamensing we would appreciate your support of the amusement tax. Township meetings are the first Tuesday of the month, 7 p.m. at the township building. Even a phone call to the township office (610-826-2522) would help. Messages can be left for the supervisors.
