L. Towamensing approves 5-year trash contract

Lower Towamensing Township awarded a five-year contract Tuesday to Casella Mid-Atlantic, LLC in the amount of $1,475,900 with toter trash cans.

The cost comes out to $295,180 per year, or $24,598 per month.

The new contract runs from April 1 through March 31, 2031.

It represents about a $20,000 increase from the current garbage contract, which ends on March 31.

Solid Waste Services Inc. also bid on the project.

In December, supervisors agreed to raise the garbage bill by $100 across the board.

That means residents who paid $230 now must pay $330, while senior citizens who paid $200 now must pay $300.

The new garbage rates went into effect Jan. 1.

When the township sought bids five years ago, County Waste was awarded the contract. County Waste was bought out by GFL, which was subsequently bought out by Casella.

In December, supervisors adopted this year’s $934,192 general fund budget with no tax increase.

The millage rate remains at 2.5 mills.
