Cancer Society selling daffodils through March 13

The American Cancer Society is taking daffodil and tulip orders through March 13.

“The especially frigid and snowy winter has really messed with us,” said Joe Krushinsky, chairman of the American Cancer Society Telethon.

“With so many school closures and delays, so many disruptions in people’s lives, we just weren’t reaching all the people who so faithfully support our campaign and enjoy those daffodils and tulips after a long winter,” Krushinsky added.

Organizers reached out to the local flower supplier, Van Hoekelen Greenhouses in Schuylkill County, to extend the deadline.

The American Cancer Society Telethon relies on daffodil sales to account for about $15,000 to $20,000 of the telethon total.

“The weather really put all that at risk, and there would be no way to make up that kind of money any other way on such short notice,” Krushinsky said. “It pays to have a great local partner like Van Hoekelen.”

The Daffodil Days Campaign offers an array of popular items including the traditional bunch of cut daffodils, potted mini daffodils, daffodils in a glass vase, tulip bunches and vases.

To order, call 570-805-4555, fax at 570-805-4554, email at CancerTelethon@gmail.com, at the volunteer office at 33 W. Ridge St., Lansford, or at Hiles Brothers office in Summit Hill.

Krushinsky said that even after the official date, volunteers will take any straggler orders they can — while supplies last.

“We try to order a few extras for direct sales at a few locations, but if we have to pull flowers from some of those sites to fill any last-minute orders, that is what we will do,” he said.

The telethon will be broadcast live from Penn’s Peak on April 11-12.
