Three area girls advance to state tournament
QUAKERTOWN — This is the time of year Brenda Banks looks forward to.
The Panther Valley senior wrestles a lot of matches, and a lot of tournaments looking for competition that can challenge her.
While it might not show in the results, Banks got just what she was looking for Sunday at the PIAA Southeast Regional Wrestling Championships.
She pinned all three of her opponents in 31 seconds or less at Quakertown High School to win her fourth straight regional title. Banks insists it’s not as easy as she makes it looks.
“At the regional level, I don’t expect 30-second pins,” she said. “Even though I understand I am an exceptional wrestler, it’s still tough. It’s always going to be a fight to get the win. I ended matches quickly and the way I wanted to with good control this week.”
Banks (235) is one of three Times News area wrestlers to advance through regionals and qualify for the state championship meet. Northern Lehigh’s Anna Trelease (142) took third place, while Banks’ teammate — Alisa Williams — finished fourth at regionals and will move on.
Banks won her first regional match with a 22-second pin in Sunday’s quarterfinals. She put Council Rock’s Mackenzie O’Donnel on her back in 26 seconds in the semifinal. In the final, she finished off Strath-Haven’s Kindal Bizzel-Brown in 31 seconds.
“I love competing,” said Banks, who is ranked in the top 10 in the nation in her weight class. “That is the best part about wrestling. Competing is truly what it is for me. When I go up against people that give me a true challenge, that’s what I wrestle for. I wrestle for the fight to win. I love that.”
Banks has won 106 matches in her high school career, including every postseason title she’s ever competed for. She’s looking for her fourth state title, and looking forward to the challenge that comes with competing in that tournament.
“I love states,” she said. “High school wrestling is one of my favorite parts of the season as a whole. I can’t wait to hopefully get my fourth state title and end with a good win.”
Trelease, a sophomore, opened the regional tournament with a three-minute and 13-second pin of Avon Grove’s Emma Rose Arnold. A loss to eventual regional champ Jenny Gautreau (Owen J. Roberts) in the semifinals sent her to the consolation bracket.
The District 11 runner-up pinned William Tennent’s Yasmina Ergashova in 2:17 in the consolation semifinal to earn a place in the third-place match, and secure her spot at the state championships as the top four regional finishers advance.
Trelease put Downingtown West’s Avery Dunn on her back in 31 seconds in the third-place match to earn her first regional medal.
“I’m just very grateful,” she said. “Blessed to be here and be able to wrestle.”
She said one key to her success was “just being patient with my shots, not taking sloppy shots, but realizing there was competition and I was going to have to work my moves and work what I’ve been working hard on.”
Williams, a Panther Valley senior, won her quarterfinal match with a pin of Jada Akins (Harry S. Truman) in 2:52. She lost to eventual champ Bryce Snyder (Palisades) in the semifinal round, but won her consolation match against Amina Kromah (Academy Park) with a pin in 1:58 to advance to the third-place match and secure her trip to states.
“I’m so glad that I made it, and I can’t wait to compete at states,” Williams said.
It’s the senior’s second trip to states in two years. It will be the final event of a high school career that includes 78 wins over three seasons. While she wasn’t pleased with her performance at regionals, she looks forward to using last year’s experience to help her at states.
“With wrestling, experience is key,” she said. “I feel as though, compared to how I wrestled last year, I think I wrestled way better this year.
“We have a week to practice before states to put it all out on the big stage.”
HOW SWEET IT IS...State qualifiers will compete at the Giant Center in Hershey March 5-7.

With just two wrestlers in the event, Panther Valley (40) finished ninth out of 44 teams, while Trelease got 18 points for Northern Lehigh (27th).
