Speed limits reduced on highways

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is temporarily reducing the speed limit on several roadways across the region.

PennDOT is urging motorists to avoid unnecessary travel but those who must head out will see speeds reduced to 45 mph on the following highways: Interstates 78, 80, 81, and 380 and routes 22, 33 and 309.

In addition, commercial vehicles are prohibited on the following interstates: I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway section), I-78 , I-80 from I-81 to New Jersey, I-84, I-95, I-295 entire length, I-380, I-476, Route 33, Route 22 from I-78 to New Jersey, PA Turnpike I-95, I-276 and Northeast Extension I-476 entire length.

Additionally, restrictions apply to all school buses, commercial buses, motor coaches, motorcycles, RVs/motorhomes and passenger vehicles (cars, SUVs, pickup trucks, etc.) towing trailers.

While avoiding or delaying unnecessary travel during winter storms is the safest choice, PennDOT offers this advice if drivers must travel and encounter snow squalls or blowing or drifting snow:

• Slow down gradually and drive at a speed that suits conditions.

• Turn on your headlights. If caught in a snow squall, turn on your hazard lights.

• Stay in your lane and increase your following distance.

• Stay alert, keep looking as far ahead as possible and be patient.

• Do not drive distracted; your full attention is required.

• Use your defroster and wipers.

• Keep windows and mirrors free of snow and ice.
