Snow is back for Sunday
What’s been a relatively snow-free month is about to pick up steam later this weekend.
While today will be mild with a high in the low 40s, Sunday will mark a shift in the recent weather pattern.
Anywhere from 3 to 6 inches of snow could drop throughout the day, according to Tom Kines, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather.
“Any time for Sunday is fair game (for the snow),” Kines said. “It could continue into Sunday night.”
Kines said the snow is likely to arrive in the morning, and that the chances of it snowing at 9 a.m. are the same as they will be at 1 p.m.
“There’s some talk in the office here that during the day Sunday, maybe the roads aren’t all that bad because temperatures will be close to freezing,” he said. “While it may not be great traveling, if this were January it may be worse.”
On Friday afternoon the National Weather Service was already sending alerts for heavy snow and wind gusts as high as 35 mph.
If there are errands to be run, Kines cautioned that it would be best to square them away before Sunday.
“I do think the roads will get worse late in the day into Sunday night,” he said. “On Monday, I suspect it’s going to be a slow go out there.”
Kines added most of the accumulating snow figures to be done with by the time daybreak comes Monday.
“Slow travel early Monday,” he cautioned. “It could be tough sledding out there.”
Kines said it will probably get a little blustery once the storm departs Monday and picks up that night, and while there will likely be a notable breeze blowing on Tuesday, it doesn’t figure to be as noticeable as Monday’s will be.
“Early next week, probably a little bit of melting going on,” he said. “With temperatures well below freezing at night, you got to worry about some slippery spots (on driveways, sidewalks).”
Kines said he believes that temperature-wise, it will be on the chilly side once the storm departs, with highs only in the low- to mid-30s for the early part of this week.
“Typically this time of year, we should be seeing temperatures at or a little above 40 degrees,” he said. “It will be chillier than it should be this time of year.”
Although there may be a brief spell of mild weather toward the end of the work week, Kines said there are some signs there could be some more colder weather coming back in next Saturday or Sunday.
