Lehighton police to conduct Tobacco Compliance checks

The Lehighton Borough Police Department is again partnering with the American Lung Association to conduct Tobacco Compliance checks on borough retailers.

In the summer of 2024, the Lehighton Borough Police Department conducted tobacco compliance checks on 14 retailers within borough limits. Four of the retailers illegally sold a tobacco product to a minor, age 16, who was assisting our agency in the operation. Retailers found in violation were issued administrative fines. For the first documented offense, fines range from $100-$500.

The Lehighton Area School District mentioned in their December, 2025 meeting, they were seeing larger numbers of incidents surrounding students illegally being in possession of tobacco products while on school district property.

The Lehighton Area School District Board hoped the Lehighton Borough Police Department could monitor borough retailers, which dispense tobacco products, to ensure they were not selling illegally to minors.

The American Lung Association will provide funding to assist in offsetting overtime cost associated with conducting additional enforcement efforts of these businesses. The Lehighton Borough Police Department will be conducting a Tobacco Compliance Checks in the near future and may be conducting additional compliance checks in the fall of 2026.

The Lehighton Borough Police Department is committed to the health and well-being of our residents. We hope our combined efforts can make a difference in the young adults of our community.
