14 homes, apartment complex in Palmerton without water

At least 20 dwellings in a section of Palmerton have been without water for a week.

Zacheriah Taylor posted word of the situation Thursday morning on Palmerton Here and Now.

Taylor said the situation has affected 14 private homes, as well as six Harvard apartment units.

He noted in his post the matter is affecting senior citizens, mothers, babies and disabled veterans.

Taylor said that around 11 a.m. Jan. 24, the water pressure “just fell out and within an hour we had zero (water) in our homes.”

At that point, he said “several residents in the area called up the apartment manager, but she had no clue there was any issue whatsoever.”

“Sunday was the snowstorm, I believe Monday midday the maintenance company had delivered a single case of water bottles to each of the people in the apartments,” Taylor said. “And nothing to the homeowners until Wednesday that the homeowners themselves got a 36-pack of water bottles.”

Taylor said it’s been a delicate situation to navigate.

“It’s been interesting,” he said. “We’ve all become incredibly and increasing frustrated, and very unhappy with the service.”

Taylor added that the maintenance crew that’s employed by the apartments have been showing each morning, but added, “There’s been zero answers other than there’s been a break in the main.”

“We don’t have a clue if they’re going to be able to fix it, or when we’re going to get water back,” he said. “The lack of professionalism in notifying the homeowners as to (when) the water company is going to rectify the situation is unacceptable.”

To make matters worse, Taylor, a disabled veteran, said that a mere half-block below them is tied into the borough water supply.

“I’ve learned to just embrace the fact that this is my life, and I’ve got to keep finding things to move forward and better the lives of other veterans,” he said.

Contacted Friday morning, borough Manager Autumn Canfield explained there’s nothing the borough can do for the residents.

“The residents who do not have water are not part of the Palmerton Water system,” Canfield said. “We have received calls regarding the issue and informed the callers we are unable to assist as it is not our water system.”

Canfield expounded on the situation further.

“Those affected are part of a private system unrelated to the borough water system,” Canfield said. “Unfortunately, there is nothing the borough can do in this matter.”

Canfield said further requests for information would need to be discussed with the owner of the system.

Contacted Friday morning, a representative from D’s Water Co, of Palmerton, declined comment.
