Bears building something bigger at EPCs

EASTON - Pleasant Valley girls wrestling head coach James Weiss isn’t focused only on results.

He wants his wrestlers to learn the right way to compete in the sport.

Weiss got what he was looking for Saturday at the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Championships, where two Bears earned medals and several others made it deep into the tournament.

“A lot of these girls are only second-year wrestlers,” Weiss said. “They’re just getting to the point that they love this and might be making a decision that this is their life now.”

Senior Josie Fetterman led the team with a second-place finish at the event, held at Easton Middle School.

Fetterman pinned her first two opponents in the third period at the league tournament. She put Parkland’s Victoria Lasagna on her back in 5:31 in the quarterfinal round, and then showed Pocono Mountain West’s Glory Joledo the lights in 5:05.

Fetterman, the No. 2 seed in the 148-pound bracket, lost in the title bout to fifth-seeded Ariana Koberlein (Emmaus), 7-2.

“Josie has 100 percent become a wrestler,” said Weiss. “She’s not going after cheap stuff. She’s a wrestler. She’s attacking legs and stuff like that. That’s all I ask these girls to do. I don’t ask them to go out and win. I ask them to go out and be wrestlers.”

Fetterman is 19-5 this season.

Bears junior Hailey Marsh took third place at EPCs.

The No. 3 seed at 190, Marsh pinned Nazareth’s Aubrey Davidson in 4:49 in the quarterfinal round before falling to No. 2 seed Ellie Rumbalski in the semifinals.

Marsh pinned Petra Perez (Emmaus) in 4:23 in the consolation semifinals to earn a spot in the title bout against Davidson, who she pinned in 36 seconds in the rematch.

Four other PV wrestlers made it to the consolation semifinals and were one win away from earning a medal, which went to the top four finishers.

Taylor Hawkins (119), Emilynn Stipeck (142), Isabella Altemose (155) and Jocelynn Cervenka (235) all reached the consolation semifinal round.

“I’m happy with a lot of the girls,” said Weiss. “We still have a lot of green girls. This is their first season coming out. For them to make things like the blood round, it exceeds expectations.”

Weiss is excited to see what his team can do in the district tournament. He believes his wrestlers’ best is yet to come.

“I think last year my girls peaked at [the EPC Championships],” he said. “I haven’t seen them peak yet, so I’m excited to see what happens in three weeks.”

TEAM STANDINGS ... The Bears finished 10th as a team with 70 points. Parkland cruised to the team title with 225. The Trojans crowned four champs, had six wrestlers in title bouts and four others in third-place matches, where three of them were victorious.

UP NEXT ... While most teams still have a dual meet or two left on the schedule, the focus now is on the District 11 Championships, slated for Feb. 14-15 at Freedom High School.
