Man charged with stealing from resort

An Ohio man has been charged with stealing packages and mail from a delivery room at a resort in Franklin Township.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by David Roberts of the Franklin Township Police Department in the case against Ramon Heredia:

On Jan. 14, the police department was dispatched to Sunny Rest Resort for the theft and damage of packages and mail from its delivery room.

Roberts arrived at the location and met with resort management, who showed him security footage.

Around 7 a.m. Jan. 13, a black sedan was captured pulling up to the security entrance post.

A white man with gray hair, wearing glasses, a black long sleeve Alpha Omega Epsilon shirt, gray sweatpants and dark blue/white Nike sneakers, and appearing to have a distinctive scar on his right forehead, entered the package room.

The man, Heredia, 52, proceeds to open various packages, inspecting contents and subsequently removing two bottles of what is believed to be personal lubricants, and then exits the structure.

At around 8 a.m. Jan. 13, Heredia again arrives at the building and enters, again inspecting and opening packages, and possibly removing enveloped mail just out of frame, before taking a box of Optofendy sunglasses, at which time he does look up and observe the security camera and immediately exits the building. While doing so, he puts the Optofendy sunglasses and packaging into a trash receptacle.

Other camera footage captures the black sedan, which appears to be a black Nissan Altima.

Automated license plate recognition resources were queried for the Ohio registration, and the vehicle was located in multiple locations in Ohio and Franklin Township in the recent past.

The vehicle was confirmed to be a Nissan Altima sedan, and the registration of the plate was identified as Heredia, of Waynesburg, Ohio.

Ohio operator information was obtained for Heredia; there was a strong resemblance to the suspect on security footage, including the distinctive scar on the forehead.

At around 1:30 p.m. Jan. 14, an ALPR alert was received in the area of Mahoning Township. The Jim Thorpe Police Department subsequently was able to stop the black 2015 Nissan Altima sedan, and Heredia was identified as the operator.

He was taken into custody without incident and was verbally advised of his rights at 2 p.m.

Heredia stated that he was at Sunny Rest Resort on Jan. 13, and was the man captured in the video.

He stated that he removed the lubricant and that it was under the front driver seat of the 2015 black Nissan Altima.

The distinctive long sleeve shirt worn at the time Heredia stated is still located in his hotel room.

Heredia subsequently provided a written statement to the same effect.

He faces charges of criminal trespass-enter structure; theft by unlawful taking; receiving stolen property; and criminal attempt — theft by unlawful taking.

He is currently free in lieu of $100,000 unsecured bail, and scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Feb. 4 before District Judge William J. Kissner of Palmerton.
