Committee forms to improve SH Memorial Park
A committee spearheaded by a member of Summit Hill Borough Council is working to improve the Summit Hill Memorial Park. The park sits between West Hazard and West Fell streets.
Marlene Basiago, who is heading the efforts as a private resident, said a meeting attended by about 10 people came up with several proposals.
The park is the former Presbyterian Cemetery and has several headstones.
Basiago said among the projects planned for this year are installing composite material benches, creating paths using stone or pavers and adding lighting.
She said she anticipates this being done through donations and not with borough funds.
Recently, she spearheaded a community project to successfully raise money for new Christmas lights.
With the park project, Basiago said another thing discussed was that there might be people who would like to install a flower garden and then maintain it.
Future projects, she said, would include adding picnic tables, repairing walls around the park and installing plaques identifying the grave markers.
Basiago said students from the Carbon Career Training and Technical Institute will help with some of the work this year.
She added she will discuss with CCTTI the potential of renovating a coal car that sits along Pine Street.
Basiago is hoping financial support can come from individuals and businesses.
