4 charged in LV smoke shop holdups
Four Hazleton men were charged Thursday in connection with two armed robberies at Lehigh Valley smoke shops in September, according to investigators.
The first robbery occurred about 1:20 a.m. Sept. 10 at the Cherryville Vape and Cigar Shop in the 4200 block of Lehigh Drive, Lehigh Township. Police were initially dispatched to the area for a reported armed robbery at a nearby Turkey Hill convenience store.
When officers arrived, they spoke with the cashier, who said several men wearing hoodies entered the vape shop and robbed him at gunpoint. The cashier reported that all of the men were armed with handguns, which they pointed at him during the robbery.
The men obtained about $300 from the cash register, along with numerous vapes and THC products. Investigators said the suspects destroyed the store’s phone and stole the cashier’s personal cellphone, preventing him from calling police. The total value of stolen merchandise was estimated at $2,300.
Surveillance video showed five men entering the shop at 1:19 a.m. Investigators identified the first as Leonardo Henriquez-Diaz, 23, who was not wearing a mask or gloves and had on a black hoodie. He appeared to be working with the others during the robbery.
The second suspect was identified as Frankelly Isabel-Ramirez, 23, who wore a black hoodie with white lettering on the back, black pants, black-and-white sneakers and a black mask covering the lower half of his face.
A third suspect, who has not been identified, wore a gray hoodie with “UCONN” printed on the front, black sweatpants, black sneakers with white soles, and a full-face clown mask with orange hair.
The fourth suspect was identified as Branny De La Cruz-Rodriguez, 24, who wore a black hoodie with an eagle head on the front, gray pants, black-and-red sneakers and a black face mask.
The fifth suspect was identified as Thiago Araujo-Guerrero, 22, who wore a black “Hollister” hoodie, red sweatpants, black sneakers and a black face mask.
Police said Isabel-Ramirez, De La Cruz-Rodriguez and Araujo-Guerrero were seen holding firearms during the robbery.
Investigators also identified a blue Honda Civic on surveillance video leaving the Cherryville scene. The vehicle is registered to Ninon Guerrero-De-Santana, Araujo-Guerrero’s mother.
Two days later, at about 3:40 a.m. Sept. 12, Allentown police responded to a burglary alarm at Smoke Mania 24/7 in the 2700 block of West Emmaus Avenue. The store clerk reported that four men robbed him at gunpoint. Investigators determined the same blue Honda Civic was used during that robbery.
Later that day, at about 9:50 p.m., state police from the Hazleton barracks located the Honda Civic in Hazle Township, Luzerne County. A traffic stop was conducted, and Araujo-Guerrero, Isabel-Ramirez, De La Cruz-Rodriguez and Henriquez-Diaz were taken into custody.
Police searched the vehicle and recovered two BB gun pistols that investigators said matched the appearance of guns used in both robberies.
On Sept. 16, Detective Matthew Tretter of the Northampton County Drug Task Force reviewed surveillance footage from both robberies, along with law enforcement photographs of the four suspects. Investigators said all four were identified as participants in both incidents.
All four men were charged with robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, theft and receiving stolen property.
