Donation in memory of Mary Fox
Nesquehoning is remembering a longtime councilwoman and lifelong volunteer who passed away last month by supporting the church she loved.
Last week, borough council approved donating $250 to Meed’s United Church on West Catawissa Street to help cover the bill for clock maintenance inside the “town clock.”
Councilwoman Suzanne Smith said that this is in memory of Mary Fox, who was a pillar of the Nesquehoning community with her volunteerism and support of area groups.
“Anyone that knew Mary knew how closely she was with Meed’s Church,” Smith said. “The clock was really one of her babies over there and it’s a big expense for the church to cover the maintenance of the clock, which every views as the town clock.”
Smith noted that after Fox’s passing, the borough recreation committee learned of an outstanding bill for the clock so the community events group came up with the idea to begin a fund in Fox’s memory to help the church maintain the clock for years to come.
“We’re going to try and get some fundraisers going,” Smith said. “Anybody who would like to make a donation (can do so) whether it directly to Meed’s Church, or they can do it through the borough.”
Donations through the borough should be earmarked for the town clock.
“We just kind of want to pick up where she had left off,” Smith said.
Councilwoman Lisa Shubeck added that she believed the Nesquehoning recreation commission, which is separate from the recreation committee, is also making a donation in Mary’s memory.
