Palmerton approves 4% raise for police chief

The head of Palmerton’s police force has received a new one-year deal that calls for a 4.5% raise in his salary.

On a unanimous vote, borough council on Thursday approved an agreement with police Chief Tim Kromer.

The agreement calls for Kromer to receive a salary of $104,822.

In January, borough council on a 6-0 vote approved an agreement with Kromer that called for him to receive a salary of $100,308.

In January 2024, borough council on a 5-0 vote at its reorganization meeting approved an agreement with Kromer that called for him to receive a salary of $96,450.

In February 2023, council approved a one-year agreement with Kromer at a salary of $89,870.

That came after council in July 2022 granted Kromer a salary increase of $3,000 following his review.

Additionally, council at that time approved an increase in Kromer’s allowance for compensatory time from 40 hours to 50 hours until the end of the year.

Earlier this month, Lehighton Borough Council approved a new two-year deal with its police chief that calls for a 4% raise in his salary in year one.

On a 5-0 measure, Lehighton Borough Council after a near 30-minute executive session approved police Chief Troy Abelovsky’s 2026-27 employment contract. Councilwoman Autumn Abelovsky abstained from the vote because she is Troy’s wife.

Abelovsky’s new salary will be $114,650 in 2026. The patrolman contract is being negotiated spring/summer, and Abelovsky’s 2027 salary will match whatever is negotiated for his patrolmen, Lehighton Borough Manager Dane DeWire said after the meeting.

Lehighton Mayor Ryan Saunders vouched for Abelovsky, noting that he’s taken on patrols when officers have been out.

Abelovsky was hired by council on a 5-0 vote in November 2023 as the borough’s new police chief.

He was hired under the terms of a one-year contract at a salary of $100,000, prorated through the end of that year.

The contract called for a 4% raise in 2024, which pushed his salary to $104,000.

Last year, council approved a 6% raise in his salary as part of the 2025 employment contract.

That raised his salary to $110,240.
