Outgoing mayor thanks Palmerton
Palmerton’s outgoing mayor used his final public meeting on Thursday as a platform to thank the borough for its support, and to wish it continued prosperity in the future.
“Tonight, as I sit before you for the final time as mayor of Palmerton Borough, I do so with a full heart and deep gratitude,” Mayor Don Herrmann said. “Serving this community has been one of the greatest honors of my life.
“Palmerton is more than a place on a map. It is a town built on hard work, resilience and a strong sense of looking out for another. From our neighborhoods and schools to our businesses, churches and civic organizations, this borough is defined by people who care — and that have inspired me every single day I have served.”
Herrmann wasn’t done handing out words of kindness.
“I want to thank the borough council, past and present, for your partnership, your thoughtful debate and your commitment to doing what’s best for Palmerton,” he said. “Good government is never about one person, and I am proud of what we’ve accomplished together through cooperation and respect.
“To our borough employees — public works, police, fire, administration and all who quietly keep this town running — thank you. Your dedication often goes unseen, but it never goes unfelt. Palmerton is stronger and safer because of you.
“I also want to thank my family and loved ones for their patience and support. Public service asks a great deal not just of those who serve, but of those who stand beside them. I could not have done this without you.”
Herrmann said that as he steps away from the mayoral role on Dec. 31, he does so with confidence in Palmerton’s future.
“New leadership will bring new ideas and new ways to face the tough challenges that lie ahead,” he said. “I encourage everyone here to continue being engaged, informed and involved. The strength of this borough has always come from its people.”
Herrmann added that while his time as mayor was coming to an end, his commitment to the borough does not.
“This will always be my home, and I will always be proud to say I served this community,” he said. “Thank you for the trust you placed in me. Thank you for the friendships, the challenges and the memories. And thank you, Palmerton, for allowing me the privilege of serving you.”
Herrmann closed by wishing the borough continued growth, urging it residents to care for one another and move forward together.
Councilwoman Holly Hausman Sell told Herrmann “it’s been a pleasure serving with you,” and thanked him for his service.
Herrmann was on the primary ballot for reelection in spring, but announced in July that he was withdrawing his name, citing additional responsibilities at his full-time job as the impetus for his decision.
Herrmann was set to run unopposed in last month’s general election. He was originally sworn in to a four-year term as mayor at council’s January 2022 reorganization meeting.
Active in the community, Herrmann took over for former mayor and current borough Councilman William Gallagher.
Bo Rodriguez, who ran unopposed last month, will take over as mayor at the beginning of the new year.
