West Penn Twp. to see tax increase in 2026
West Penn Township residents will see a 10% increase in their municipal taxes next year.
Supervisors Tuesday morning unanimously adopted the 2026 budget and a resolution adopting the budget with the following parameters:
• Approved the tax worksheet generated by Schuylkill County Assessment Office, to establish the 2026 revenue neutral tax millage rate for the township to be 1.041 mills, based on the total amount of taxes levied for 2026 against real properties contained in the township duplicate in an amount not exceeding the tax rate establishing the total amount levied on the properties in 2025.
• Additionally, the board approved the tax worksheet generated by Schuylkill County Assessment Office, to establish a final tax millage rate for the township for 2026 to be fixed at 1.145 mills, representing the figure which limits the total amount of taxes levied for 2026 against the real properties contained in the tax duplicate for 2025 to be no more than 10% greater than 1.041, being the total amount the township levied on the properties in 2025, notwithstanding the increased valuations of the properties under the revised assessment.
• Adopted an ordinance fixing the tax rate for fiscal year 2026 at 1.145 mills each dollar of assessed real property valuation.
Township treasurer Karen Wittig said the increase means that the average homeowner in the township will pay $22.50 more in their municipal taxes next year.
Last month, supervisors agreed to advertise next year’s budget.
Afterward, the board approved next year’s spending plan with a 10% increase of real estate taxes, which equates to $71,715.
Before that vote, board Chairman Tony Prudenti noted that the township was originally $225,000 over what it was at last year.
It was noted that the road department came down $42,000 (part-time seasonal employee), the police department took $5,000 out (wages) and the office department went down by $5,000.
Last year, supervisors adopted this year’s budget with a 1-mill increase, which raised the millage rate from 3.50 to 4.50 mills.
