Company to revise Nesquehoning data center plans

A proposed plan for constructing a data center in Nesquehoning has been temporarily withdrawn for review by the Carbon County Planning Commission.

David Bodnar, director of the Carbon County Office of Planning and Development, confirmed that the Carbon Node East Development LLC project plans were removed from the planning commission’s agenda for today.

“The applicant requested to withdraw its Preliminary Land Development Application,” he wrote via email Monday afternoon.

The project calls for the first phase of the construction of a data center on approximately 103 acres of land, located on the north side of Industrial Road, just off Dennison Road in the borough. The land is owned by Kovatch Enterprises.

Bitfarms representatives, the company proposing the data center, provided a statement Monday evening further explaining the withdrawal.

“Bitfarms’ request to have the Nesquehoning project withdrawn from this month’s Carbon County Planning Commission meeting agenda is a short-term action,” the statement said. “The company plans to submit all documents to support the full development of the project in January for review by the commission.”

The plans originally came up at the county planning commission during its November meeting.

At that time, Ivan O. Meixell, county planner, recused himself from reviewing the plans due to a conflict of interest.

The planning commission voted to utilize Greg Haas of Keystone Engineering to review the plans, and then on the recommendation of Bodnar tabled any recommendation until Haas was able to complete a full review.

The plans are for a data center complex made up of four buildings; however, the plans in front of the planning commission were currently only phase 1, Haas said, noting that it was for one building plus the infrastructure for the other phases.

Bitfarms representatives held four informational meetings last month for residents to see what the company is proposing for the site.
