Summit Hill welcomes Santa during annual event
Children got to experience North Pole weather when Santa arrived in Summit Hill Sunday night.
The annual Christmas on the Hill was held and about 50 people attended despite temperatures just above single digits and frozen snow pack.
He and Mrs. Claus arrived via fire apparatus by the Diligence Fire Company.
The visit by Santa was moved into the Hilltop Community Center because of the frigid weather, although it was preceded by a lighting ceremony at the gazebo in neighboring Ludlow Park. This year the gazebo received professional decor.
Christmas on the Hill was sponsored by the Summit Hill Recreation Commission.
Kathy Gieniec, chairman of the commission, greeted the children and parents who attended and urged them to take photos with Santa.
Amber Zuber, a member of the Recreation Commission, said she was pleased with the turnout considering the brutal weather conditions.
“I’m surprised so many people came,” she said.
Each child was given time to tell Santa their gift wishes and then received a candy cane. In addition, Chief of Police Todd Woodward, who was assisted by his son Noah, handed each child a stuffed reindeer.
Outgoing Mayor Jeffrey Szczecina and borough council member Karen Ruzicka also were present.
Refreshments were provided by Kitty Kat Concessions.
The stuffed reindeer were provided by a donation from Tom and Janel Tirpak of Summit Hill, owners of Northeast Chemical Supply.
The Summit Hill American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, and Sons of the American Legion contributed $500 toward Christmas on the Hill.
Free trolley rides throughout the community were scheduled but had to be canceled because of the weather.
