Lower Towamensing Township residents won’t have to allocate any extra funds toward their municipal tax rates next year. However, they will have to pay more on their garbage bills after supervisors on a 2-0 vote Tuesday agreed to raise the rate by $100 across the board.
That means residents who paid $230 will now have to spend $330, while senior citizens who paid $200 will now owe $300.
The new garbage rates go into effect Jan. 1.
Casella is the township’s current waste hauler. When the township sought bids five years ago, County Waste was awarded the contract. County Waste was bought out by GFL, which was subsequently bought out by Casella.
The township’s current contract ends on March 31.
The board’s concern is that the township’s rate will double, if not rise once, under a new contract.
Supervisor Michael Takerer said the board is aware the garbage rates are going to go up significantly.
“We’re going to face an increase, period,” Takerer said.
The board on the same vote adopted the 2026 budget with no tax increase.
The millage rate will remain at 2.5 mills.
Township secretary RoniSue Ahner said the general fund budget comes in at $934,192.
Supervisor Jay Mullikin was absent.
Last December, supervisors adopted this year’s budget, which also had no increase in the tax rate.
