The storm that hit the region this week made it hectic for police from Troop M, Bethlehem, as they were summoned to investigate 35 motor vehicle crashes in their coverage area of Northampton, Lehigh and Bucks counties.
In addition, police said 32 motorists were rendered “disabled” during Tuesday’s storm. Four other incidents were labeled “road debris” by police.
In a report released Wednesday, police cautioned drivers to remove snow and ice from their vehicles, noting Pennsylvania law requires drivers to make a reasonable effort to clear their hoods, trunks and roofs of snow and ice within 24 hours after the event. Failure to do so can result in a $50 fine for each offense, regardless of whether or not any snow or ice is dislodges from the vehicle.
Police said when snow and ice falls from a moving vehicle and strikes another vehicles or pedestrian, causing death or serious bodily injuries, drivers can be fined at least $200 and up to $1,500 for each offense.
