W. Penn remains focused on creating new park

West Penn Township hasn’t lost sight of plans to create a recreational facility.

Board Chairman Tony Prudenti asked at Tuesday morning’s board of supervisors meeting what the status was concerning Atlas Park.

It was noted that they are looking to get the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in, and that another meeting has to be rescheduled due to the government shutdown.

In June, the supervisors issued another plea for volunteers to serve on the park commissions.

That came after Prudenti said in May that ground for the township’s newest park, Atlas Park, was expected to be broken in June.

At that time, Prudenti said he was hopeful that people would step forward to form a commission to oversee the park.

Atlas Park will be created on land donated by Dennis D’Angelo of Bella Terra Farms.

D’Angelo turned over about 25 acres of land near the former Atlas Powder Company to the township.

Township solicitor Paul J. Datte previously said that a deed for the land had been recorded.

Prudenti noted at that time that D’Angelo has agreed to volunteer on the commission.

The township received a $242,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources several years ago to aid with the park’s development.
