Bitfarms to present data center plans to Nesquehoning community next week
A Canadian-based company that is proposing to construct a data center in Nesquehoning will hold three public meetings to allow residents to learn about the company’s plans.
Representatives from Bitfarms LTD, which owns Panther Creek Power Plant in Nesquehoning and currently conducts bitcoin mining at the site, will be at the Nesquehoning Recreation Center, 335 W. Railroad St., on Monday and Tuesday for overviews of the project.
The meetings will be held at 3 p.m. Monday; and 9 a.m. and noon Tuesday.
“The Bitfarms team will present the plans for the project and what the community can expect,” a statement from the company said. “The company will also address the frequently asked questions around data centers and answer any questions related to the data center.”
In August, the company announced its plans to construct a data center adjacent to its Panther Creek operation.
Since then, PPL Electric has announced a new 69 kilovolt transmission line traveling from a new substation that is proposed in Tresckow, over the Broad Mountain and down to the Hauto substation, where a separate line will be run to the area of Panther Creek.
In October, Bitfarms announced that up to $300 million in project-specific financing for the development of its data center campus at Panther Creek.
In that release, Ben Gagnon, CEO, states that approximately $50 million to “fund civil works and substation construction at Panther Creek, which are on track to begin in Q4 2025.”
The project includes building a 350 megawatt high-performance computing and artificial intelligence facility, with phase 1 expected by year-end 2026.
Nesquehoning council and planning commission began the process of creating an ordinance to regulate data centers within the borough, but has not finalized its ordinance, with an anticipated preliminary approval in December and final approval in January.
