Walnutport discusses borough security
Improved safety measures at Walnutport’s borough building is under consideration.
Councilwoman Patrice Hunsicker brought up the matter of cameras for the borough building at Thursday’s borough council meeting.
Hunsicker noted it’s a government building.
Councilwoman Jen Wentz said a lot of modifications would have to made, and wasn’t sure how possible that is with the borough building.
Council President Mike Gaston said that he, much like everyone on council, wants the building to be secure.
Councilman David Wentling said he believes the fact that the borough police station is located inside the building helps in that it serves as a deterrent.
“I’m just thinking of the security of everyone in this building,” Hunsicker said.
Council then agreed to have borough engineer Jason Newhard come in and get a proposal to study secure vestibules.
In August, council discussed the possibility of relocating its police station to its current recreation building.
At that time, borough council discussed moving its headquarters from its current site at 417 S. Lincoln Ave. to 215 S. Lincoln Ave.
The structure at 215 S. Lincoln Ave. currently houses the Walnutport Playground Association building.
Gaston said at that time the borough is thinking about moving the police station from its current headquarters at 417 S. Lincoln Ave. back to 215 S. Lincoln Ave.
He cited that the station at 417 Lincoln needs a lot of improvements.
After that meeting, borough police Chief Jason Nothstein said Gaston approached him about the possibility of moving the station for the growth of the police department.
Nothstein said at that time they want to do a feasibility study to see if it’s better to move the police department, or rehabilitate the current building, which he added needs an overhaul.
He said the police department has been at its current location for about the last 30 years.
Nothstein said the move would give the police department more room for growth, and added there are certain aspects he would like to add.
