Council seats decided in Lansford, Nesquehoning
Panther Valley area voting on Tuesday in the general election had focus on the Lansford and Nesquehoning borough council races, the only contested ones in the three Carbon communities in the district.
Six people sought three four-year terms that were up for grabs in Lansford, while five candidates sought three four-year terms in Nesquehoning.
There were no challenged races in Summit Hill Borough.
Lansford Borough
The winners in Lansford were George Gilbert, Joseph Genits and Gwyneth A. Collevechio.
Gilbert led the way with 424 votes, followed by Genits with 354 votes and Collevechio with 327 votes.
Losing out were Jennifer M. Staines, Patrick Walsh and Ashley M. Nelson Hall. Staines received 318 votes, Walsh, 264 votes, and Hall, 189 votes.
Meanwhile, four other people who appeared on the town ballots were all unopposed and collected token votes. They are Denise A. Leibensperger, 527 votes for mayor; Joseph Pavlis, 577 votes for tax collector; Daniel Wynn, 160 votes for judge of elections in the Middle District; and Jesse Durning, 128 votes for judge of elections in the West District.
Nesquehoning Borough
Incumbents Lisa Shubeck and Mary A. Fox, as well as newcomer Joshua J. Jacobs, won the terms on the Nesquehoning council.
Shubeck was the top vote recipient with 470 votes. Fox was second with 406 votes, while Jacobs won the third spot with 337 votes.
Losing out were William Bamford, 333 votes, and longtime council member and council President David Hawk, 253 votes. Hawk had been elected to council in 2004 and had served as council president since 2014.
There was only one other person on the Nesquehoning ballot, that being Patricia R. Vito, who received 667 votes for the tax collector’s position.
Summit Hill Borough
The unopposed candidates who received complimentary votes in Summit Hill include Karen L. Ruzicka, 608 votes for mayor; Edward J. Kane, 541 votes, and Joseph Weber, 511 votes, both for council posts; Nathan R. Halenar, 785 votes for tax collector; Harmony L. Smith, Republican, 162 votes for judge of elections in the First Ward; Barbara A. Shelton and Bryan A. Smith, Republican, 144 votes and 71 votes, respectively, for inspectors of elections in the First Ward; Joseph J. O’Gurek, 198 votes for judge of elections in the Second Ward; Judith Midas, Democrat, 197 votes for inspector of elections in the Second Ward; Susan Colancecco, 189 votes for a four-year term as inspector of elections in the Third Ward; and Sandra Dellicker, Republican, 114 votes for inspector of elections in White Bear.
