Supervisors, council candidates win challenges in Mahoning, Lehighton

Seats on the Lehighton Borough Council and Mahoning Township Board of Supervisors were decided in the general election balloting Tuesday in the Lehighton area.

Lehighton voters selected three people from a four-candidate pool for four-year terms on the council, while two six-year terms were decided among three candidates in Mahoning Township.

Otherwise, voters in East Penn and Franklin townships and Parryville and Weissport boroughs did not have any choices to make on their municipalities’ levels.

Lehighton Borough

The winners in Lehighton included Jordyn Beth Miller, Joseph R. Flickinger and Rebecca Worthy.

Miller topped the pool with 648 votes; Flickinger was second, tallying 640 votes; and the third seat went to Worthy with 611 votes.

Losing out was Jacob R. Bonser, who had 543 votes.

Meanwhile, three other municipal office-seekers were unopposed: Ryan Saunders, Republican, 851 votes for mayor; Mary E. Strohl, 1,040 votes for tax collector; and David A. Arndt, 774 votes for a two-year term on council.

Mahoning Township

Matthew Wentz and Mark Schwalm won the supervisors’ race in the township. Wentz had 777 votes, followed by Schwalm with 654 votes.

Losing out was Carol Etheridge, who tallied 556 votes.

Uncontested candidates in Mahoning included Pauline F. Homm, 1,118 votes for tax collector; Allison Everett, 572 votes for inspector of elections in the Mahoning District; Joyce Walters, 246 votes for judge of elections in the New Mahoning District; Gilbert Walters, 243 votes for inspector of elections in the New Mahoning District; and Jane L. Arnold, 115 votes for judge of elections in the Packerton/Jamestown District.

East Penn Township

There were only two names on the township’s ballot.

Unopposed were Gary P. Kuehner, who received 700 votes for supervisor; and Kathy Henderson, Republican, who received 714 token votes for tax collector.

Franklin Township

Nicholas Storm and Sara J. Keiser sought the supervisor and tax collector posts, respectively, and were without opposition. Storm collected 996 token votes, while Keiser tallied 1,127 votes.

Other unopposed candidates on the township’s ballot were Lisa Sawyer, 422 votes for judge of elections post in the Harrity District; and Stacy J. Sheckler, 226 votes for judge of elections in the Long Run District.

Parryville Borough

Five candidates who appeared on the Parryville were all unopposed.

They are Thomas W. Kobal, 81 votes for mayor; Monica L. Kunkle and Jason T. Smith, 88 votes and 78 votes, respectively, for council; Michael Johnson, 89 votes for tax collector; and Lamont G. Sherer, 84 votes for judge of elections.

Weissport Borough

The borough had just two candidates on its ballot.

Unchallenged were Jodi Becker, who collected 53 votes for mayor; and Lynette Moyer, who tallied 56 votes for council.
