W. Penn extends burn ban
West Penn Township is extending its burn ban.
The ban, which was put in place on Oct. 7, will remain effective until at least mid-November.
“The burn ban in West Penn Township will be extended until Nov. 17,” Supervisor Glenn Hummel said during Monday’s board meeting.
At that point, he said, the ban will be reevaluated and reinstated or canceled based on weather conditions.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, Schuylkill County is under a drought watch. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration notes that most of the county is experiencing a moderate drought.
Burn ban signs have been placed at different locations around the township by the township road crew.
In an unrelated matter, bathrooms at the J.E. Morgan Park will soon be closed for the season.
The restroom facilities need to be winterized.
The work could happen within the next few days. When complete, a gate at the park will be closed to notify visitors of the facilities’ closure.
In other business, supervisors gave conditional approval to two subdivisions upon the recommendation of the township planning commission.
The Kistler subdivision includes subdividing 3.4 of 53 acres of property located near West Penn Pike (Route 309). The land is in the highway commercial and agricultural zoning districts.
The Savlik/Zimmerman subdivision and annexation includes dividing a parcel into two, and annexing a portion of one to an adjoining property. The property is located off Airstrip Lane in the agricultural zoning district.
