Tamaqua police log

Tamaqua police reported the following incidents:

• A Tamaqua man wanted on a warrant from Schuylkill County is now facing drug charges, police said.

Officers were on patrol around 2:06 a.m. Oct. 24 when they spotted Seth Valentine, 45, in the area of Lafayette and Berwick streets, and asked him where he was going.

In the meantime, officers broke contact to see if he was wanted on a warrant. When it was determined he was, officers stopped him again and told him.

As Valentine begged police to not arrest him, he discarded four small plastic bags with a white crystal-like substance onto a porch, police said.

Officers advised Valentine that he was under arrest. Police also said that his disposal of the bags was captured on the officer’s body camera.

Valentine was taken to the Schuylkill County Prison and faces a charge of possession of a controlled substance.

• A man was charged with two counts of retail theft by police after he allegedly stole items from a convenience store in the borough.

Police were told by a clerk at Fegley Mini Mart that Jeff Smulligan, no known address, keeps stealing things from the store. On Oct. 24, she said that Smulligan stole a sandwich valued at $6.88, and on Oct. 26, he took a cold coffee valued at $3.49.

• Police said Darren Charbonnier, 38, Tamaqua, stole gold jewelry from a woman’s home in Coaldale on the morning of Oct. 14.

Police said the woman told officers that she was having car problems around 8 a.m. and Charbonnier offered to help by jump-starting the car.

When it was determined that the battery was dead, the woman left to get a new one. When she returned home, she found Charbonnier in her house without her permission and going through drawers and cabinets.

Police said the woman reported three gold diamond rings and three gold necklaces valued at $3,000 were stolen.

Officers were able to identify Charbonnier after seeing footage on a neighbor’s outside surveillance camera.

Police are charging Charbonnier with burglary, theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property.
