Tamaqua borough contest on ballot Tuesday

Of the 12 municipalities in Schuylkill County that are in the Times News coverage area, only one of them has a Municipal Election contest on Tuesday.

That exists in Tamaqua Borough, where five people are running for three four-year terms on the borough council.

Otherwise, voters in 11 other municipalities will not have choices to make in the General Election. Those municipalities include: Coaldale, McAdoo and New Ringgold boroughs and Delano, East Brunswick, Kline, Rush, Ryan, Schuylkill, Walker and West Penn townships.

In Tamaqua, the council contest is between George Haldeman, who will appear on both the Democratic and Republican ballots, Republicans Kyle V. Olyphant and Kathy Kunkel and Democrats Sharon Stokes and Jillian L. Newhartz.

Meanwhile, David S. Clemson and Pamela J. McCullion are both unopposed in pursuit of four-year terms as mayor and tax collector, respectively. They appear on both ballots.

Other candidates unopposed on the borough’s ballot are Betsy Melnik, Republican, running for the six-year post as auditor; Joseph Salla Jr., Republican, seeking the four-year term as judge of elections in the Third District; Patricia Ann Burke, Democrat, running for a four-year term as inspector of elections in the Third District; Maria Derr, Republican, aspiring to a four-year term as judge of elections in the Fourth District; and Kim Haldeman, Republican, seeking the four-year term as inspector of elections in the Fourth District.

Tamaqua has no candidates for four-year terms as judges of elections and inspector of elections in both the First and Second districts. Likewise, no one is running for the four-year position as borough auditor.

More Schuylkill coverage will appear on Friday.
